In Her Words: Roos, AI Engineer at Shell

Meet Roos, an AI Engineer at Shell whose passion for AI led her to pursue a career in IT. She shares how she chose her first role and highlights the supportive and learning-focused culture at her company. Her advice to women in tech? “Be proactive and take any learning opportunity that you can get. It’s okay if you’re not perfect – you can learn!”

What do you find important in your first job?

When I was studying, I did not have a specific industry or company in mind. However, I knew I wanted to be in a technical area like Software Engineering and AI and have lots of opportunities to develop both my technical and soft skills. I wanted a challenging role with responsibility and the chance to make an impact, especially in addressing a global challenge like the energy transition. I met a Shell Campus Ambassador and was excited to hear that the Shell Graduate Programme ticked those boxes that are important to me: it offered a technical track, a challenging role and prioritised leadership development.

You studied Aerospace Engineering at Delft and are now an AI Engineer. What sparked this decision?

I studied Aerospace Engineering (Spaceflight track) because I’m fascinated by how we can use new technology and innovation to help solve societal problems. I also took additional courses in software development and completed an internship in AI, as I believe AI will play a crucial role in the future. When I passed the application process, I shared my interest in AI with the Shell recruiter who was able to find me my current role as an AI Engineer. I’m really pleased that I get to continue developing my skills on-the-job and with additional technical training assignments. It is a steep learning curve, but I get support from both a mentor and a technical buddy - who is an experienced colleague in the same skill pool – which helps me with the transition from university to my first job.

What do you love about your job and your employer?

I’m very happy with my role: I get the opportunity to work on cool optimisation and digitalisation projects that contribute to decarbonising. It is great that I can contribute to one of the most important challenges of our time – transitioning to more sustainable forms of energy - using my data & software engineering skills. Additionally, another thing that I love about the Shell Graduate Programme is not only the coaching that I receive from my mentor and technical buddy but also the support from colleagues, and even senior leaders.

What is your experience as a woman in engineering?

I studied in a male-dominated environment at university where I have experienced a degree of stereotyping and other challenges at times.  However, I have been pleasantly surprised by my positive experience at Shell, as I have not encountered similar challenges. I collaborate with colleagues from all different countries and backgrounds and have found them to be respectful and welcoming. So I can say that my experience as a woman in engineering so far has been positive!

How is your employer helping to create a more inclusive environment?

Shell has multiple employee resource groups, for example in the Netherlands we have WE (gender equality) and Pink Pearl (LGBTQ+). They offer support and inclusion to employees but also help drive Shell’s overall DE&I strategy. The senior leaders we speak to are vocal about the company’s goal to have 40% women in senior management by 2030 - I am looking forward to seeing this happen!  There is also the Young Shell network for all Dutch and international grads (and employees who feel young at heart!) that organise (in)formal networking opportunities, like lunch & learns, after-work events, external company go-sees, internal site visits, ski trips and galas. I’ve found this to be a fun and easy way to get to know people from different parts of the business in Shell.

What advice do you have for the HerFuture members?

Be proactive and take any learning opportunity that you get. It’s okay if you’re not perfect – you can learn! Take initiatives to explore new ideas, support projects/events and connect with others. Also, make sure that you enjoy your job and take regular time off when you need to.
