Name: Jaimy
Job: Data Scientist
What does a Data Scientist do at Shell?
As a Data Scientist in the Shell Energy Software team, my role involves creating tools and data models to help users perform their work more efficiently. I specialise in Natural Language Processing and Generative AI to optimise information search for users in Shell’s trading business.
Here’s what a day in Jaimy's life looks like!
9-10AM:
I usually work three days at the office – today is one of those days. I usually sit with my team, but today we've made plans with fellow graduates to sit together. This is a great way to get to know more people outside my team and share grad experiences. I start the morning with my team's daily “stand-up” meeting, where we discuss our completed projects and upcoming tasks. Our meeting is online because my team is based all over the world.
10AM-12PM:
This is my focus time, where I get to work on my GenAI projects – such an exciting project to learn about with my team! I mainly do research and analyses, but also work on the accuracy evaluation, adding features and capabilities, and improve our chatbot based on user feedback.
12-1PM:
Lunch break! I usually eat at the onsite cafeteria, which offers various hot and cold dishes. My go-to-meal is poke bowl, which you can assemble yourself. Today’s lunch was extra fun because we met the new graduates who just joined the company.
1-2PM:
I have my weekly 1:1 with my manager to discuss my ongoing projects as well as my personal growth. I find her to be very supportive and always willing to help me resolve any blockers I run into.
2-4PM:
More focus time! I am a data scientist, but I also expressed interest in learning about data engineering. I do this in collaboration with my tech lead, who assigns and supports me in various data engineering tasks, such as collecting data and preparing it for analysis.
4-5PM:
Wrapping up my day by writing a few emails and catching up with the other graduates I'm sitting with.
5-6PM:
I recently started getting into padel, and I have been loving it! From the office, I go straight to the court and play a round of padel singles.
6-7PM:
Home! After padel I pick up my dinner at the supermarket. My go-to dish when I want to cook something fast is oven vegetables with salmon.
How do you unwind at the end of the day?
It varies a lot. On some days, I play padel after work with my partner or friends. On other days, I go for after-work drinks with fellow graduates. I also love doing more relaxing activities, such as going out for food, meeting friends, or simply watching a movie on the couch. I value my personal time a lot and always make time to unwind.
What do you love about your job and your employer?
I really like the social and international culture of Shell, where it is easy to connect with people. I get to work with colleagues from different countries and learn new insights from them. What I enjoy most at Shell are the endless opportunities to learn something new. Since joining as a grad, I've gained a lot of on-the-job experience and knowledge of new technologies - working with GenAI has been particularly exciting!
