What does a Junior Software Engineer II do at Booking.com?
As a Junior Software Engineer II, my role is to develop software application, following the engineering principles. Collaboration is one of the important aspects for achieving the company's mission.
Here’s what a day in Monica's life looks like!
9-10AM:
Today is one of the days I am working from the office. Before starting my day, I go to one of the coffee bars and order a cappuccino. Then I check my emails and Slack for any news. I update my team on our channel about what I worked the previous day and what I plan to do today.
10-10:30AM:
The team's daily stand-up takes place. During this meeting we discuss our progress and any blockers that we have.
10:30AM-12PM:
I start working on a new ticket, but first, I need to gather context about it. For that, I review its description and any attached documents. If I need further clarification, I reach out to the people mentioned in the ticket.
12-1PM:
Lunch time! I have lunch with a fellow graduate at the second floor restaurant. I enjoy the fact that there are three different restaurants to choose from, with so many options.
1-2PM:
I continue with the task I started before the break.
2-3PM:
Weekly, we have an architecture discussion meeting, where team members expose the problem statement alongside the solution.
3-4PM:
I have a 1:1 meeting with my mentor to discuss the future steps for my last project.
4-5PM:
I begin testing my solution for the ticket that I have been working on today.
5-6PM:
I wrap up my day by making the last commits and updating our Jira board.
How do you unwind at the end of the day?
It depends on how I am feeling in that day. I either stay at home and watch something on Netflix or go out to have dinner with some friends.
What do you love about your job and your employer?
The aspect I’m most grateful for is the people. You are encouraged to challenge yourself and take on new opportunities, knowing that your team will be there to support you. As I’m just starting my career, I appreciate being given the chance to work on various problems that allow me to explore my team’s product and face situations that may push me out of my comfort zone.
