What do you do in your role?
As a software consultant, I am helping design, build, and test IT solutions tailored to client needs.
Here's what a day in Rael's life looks like!
8-9 AM:
Today, we're working from the client's office, which we do once a week. I usually start my day with a cup of coffee and by updating the hours I think I'll still need for my tasks. This helps the team keep track of our progress and see whether we're on track.
9-10 AM:
We start the day with our daily stand-up. In this meeting, everyone shares what they've been working on, what they're planning to do next, and if they need any support from the rest of the team.
10-11 AM:
Next is refinement. During this meeting, we go through user stories: short descriptions of features from the user's perspective. We ask questions, clarify details, and estimate how long we think it will take to implement each story. This helps us plan our work better and understand what can be delivered when.
11 AM-12 PM:
After refinement, I start analyzing one of the user stories I will implement and start figuring out what needs to be done. In this case, I'm working on building a new page in our application, which I begin by breaking down the requirements and planning my approach.
12-1 PM:
Then it's time for lunch. When we're at the client's office, we usually go out somewhere nearby, and today we decided on poke bowls.
1-2 PM:
After lunch, I write test cases for a user story that someone else on the team is developing. Once a story has been built, another team member tests it to make sure everything works as expected. That's when we switch our mindset from “How do I build this?” to “How can I break this?”
2-3 PM:
I then review some code, which means I check changes made by a teammate to make sure everything looks correct technically and functionally. Code reviews make sure we keep the quality of our work high and are a great way to learn from each other.
3-4 PM:
Next, I continue working on my own user story and write some code myself. This is usually when I can really focus and get into the details of the feature I'm building.
4-5 PM:
I investigate a question from the help desk about our application. They support users directly, and when they run into something they can't solve, they bring it to us. I like these cases because they often feel like small puzzles, and it's satisfying to help solve an issue that directly affects the user.
How do you unwind at the end of a workday?
I usually unwind by staying active. I really enjoy running, playing football, and bouldering, because it helps me clear my head after a busy day. I also like that Netcompany organizes social evenings with activities like bouldering, since it's a fun way to relax and connect with colleagues.
What do you love about your job and your employer?
One of the things I value most is that many of our projects are for the public sector. It makes my work feel meaningful, because I know we're contributing to solutions that can have a real impact on society.
